HIVE

Hive Architects Inc, was founded in 2016 by Principal, Joe Kelly, AIA. The firm specializes in residential architecture, interior design, and private commercial projects. Our experience is extensive in the design, development, and execution of coastal houses.

To obtain a deeper meaning in the experience of each project, the work of Hive Architects focuses on concept driven design. Our philosophy and approach to modernism is based on an analysis of the regional and climatic aspects of the site, the client's programmatic and functional desires, and the crafted selection of materials and building systems. Through this investigation and the distillation of the all project aspects, we strive to develop a concept, or organizing idea, that continues to influence and inspire our design process and decisions. With no preconceived notions of form, the resulting architecture embodies the character of its local environment, culture, and ultimately the human experience of its inhabitants.

From concept to completion, the work of Hive Architects is based upon a symbiotic interdisciplinary collaboration, including our principals, clients, and consultants. The team’s continued interaction and communication allow all team members to better understand different perspectives and points of view resulting in a refined architectural solution.

Joe Kelly, AIA, NCARB is a lifelong Florida resident who grew up in Treasure Island, Florida – 40 minutes North of Sarasota. Since his birth, he has been surrounded by creativity, art, and design. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida from a graphic designer father, and mother who single handedly managed numerous successful real estate investments for overseas clients, Joe used to spend hours in his dad's design studio, watching him draw, mix colors, paint, design logos, and develop countless corporate identities. Joe and his father also shared the common passion for designing and racing cars. They built their own sprint and enduro Karts from the ground up that they raced locally and nationally across the country, winning multiple championships throughout his racing career. As a teenager, Joe was introduced to architecture by his best friend’s father, a local residential architect, that sparked his interest in building design and the built environment.

Joe received his Bachelor of Design Degree with honors in 2001 and went on to earn a Master of Architecture Degree with high honors in 2003. Throughout his 6 years at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Joe received numerous design awards and scholarships. Most notably, he received a Design Achievement Award in 2001 for his first year graduate design studio sequence, an Academic Excellence Award for a graduate thesis project in 2002, and was a nominee for the SOM Traveling Fellowship.
