In-yo

We live in a world of duality where opposite forces, such as light and shadow, excitement and calm, or empty and full, to name a few, cannot exist without their counterpart. Their contrasting qualities create a union between them that ultimately brings them together in an opposing manner. Together yet separated, the Japanese term In-yo best describes this fruitful paradox of simultaneous unity and duality.

Derived from the Owners’ description of their lifestyle and envisioned future home, In-yo represents an interconnectivity of spaces working together yet interdependent. Located on a narrow waterfront property, the overall structure is broken down into parts to create a dynamic system in which opposing forces of various aspects work together to create a whole. The rhythmic sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces, mass and void, and shade and light articulates the organization of the structure from the street to the waterfront side. Internally, these successive spaces create another duality between the programmed rooms inhabited for an extended period and of a pausing quality and the areas of circulation that are briefly occupied and inherent to movement.

Essential to the concept of In-yo is the strategic selection of the materials. The man-made exposed smooth concrete structure establishes a solid gesture of permanence contrasted by the natural quality of the landscape plant material and texture transitioning through the seasons. The juxtaposition of mixed media extends inside the structure in a restrained yet contrastive vocabulary. The pairing of hard surfaces, soft fabrics, cold steel, and warm woods, used in various combinations of scale and texture, creates a harmonious yet dynamic balance that unifies the interiors in a dualistic language.
